What are fossils

Introduction
Fossils are remains or impressions of plants, animals, or other living beings that lived a very long time ago, sometimes millions of years ago. You can think of them as a kind of time capsule from the past.
A fossil forms in several steps. It begins when an animal, for example a dinosaur, dies. Its body remains on the ground and slowly begins to decay. The soft parts, like skin and muscles, disappear especially quickly, while the hard bones stay behind.
After a while, the body becomes covered by sand, mud, or other material. We call this sediment. This layer protects the bones from wind, rain, and animals, keeping them well preserved.
Over thousands to millions of years, something special happens. The bones slowly change into stone. This happens because minerals from the ground seep into the bones. This creates a fossil, a kind of petrified bone that still has the shape of the original animal.
One day, scientists, such as paleontologists, discover these fossils. They carefully dig them out with special tools so they don't get damaged. Thanks to these discoveries, today we can learn about animals that lived millions of years ago.
But fossils are not just bones. Sometimes they are petrified leaves or trees that have left an impression in stone. Other times they are shells or sea animals that have been well preserved. There are even fossils of footprints or skin impressions of animals, as if they left a stamp in the ground.
Scientists use fossils to discover what the world looked like in the past. They can see which animals lived, what they ate, how they moved, and even what the climate was like. So fossils are really puzzle pieces from Earth's history. And every time a fossil is found, we learn something new about life from very long ago.
