Giesdorf
Germany
Introduction
You can also find fossils in freshly plowed fields. Plowing brings hidden layers of soil to the surface. The disadvantage of plowing is that larger and softer fossils are often damaged. Always ask for permission before entering the field.
During one of our searches in Germany we came across a field with freshly sown corn. Among the young corn stalks were lots of small loose stones, as well as fossils of brachiopods, sponges and corals.
The farmer had removed a number of larger stones from his field and put them in a pile. Among them I found my first trilobite.
Geological period
Devonian
359–419 million years ago
Known as the "Age of Fishes," this period saw a great diversity of fish species. Some fish developed limbs and became the first vertebrates to walk on land. Forests also began to spread.
